BOP stands for blowout preventer and its role is to aid in preventing explosions and other disasters associated with drilling oil & gas. The figure-8 or donut type BOPs fit around the drilling pipe and then shut, whereas the annular form of BOP has a unique design that is quite circular in shape. Its main function is to close the wellbore or hole where oil and gas comes out by forming a strong tight seal around theSdrill pipe.

Ram BOPs are more common on the other side of the gamut where often debris and stuff has a higher opportunity to get into that wellbore. Interchangeable types of BOPs are used in some drilling operations for an added level of safety and protection.
